On March 25, 1909, a new history of Hwal In Gu Se (活人救世) unfolded.
80 years of Hwal In Gu Se (活人救世)! Kim Il-hoon, who spent his life with the ill and poor people, was born around 10:00 pm on March 25th of the lunar calendar in 1909 which is the year of the rooster and the 3rd year of King Soonjong of Joseon Dynasty, and was the 3rd boy in the family of 7 males and 2 females between Kim Young-sam (Eonyang Kim’s), the father, and Mrs. Yu (Kangnung Yu’s), the mother. He was born in Yeongheung-ri, Yongun-myeon, Hongwon-gun, Hamgyeongnam-do.
The parents had a dream about a dragon flying to arms from the clouds when he was conceived and named him ‘Un-Ryong’ after Un (雲) for the clouds and (R)Yong (龍) for the dragons. He used this name until right after liberation. His real name is Kim Cheol-jin, and his brother is Kim Bong-jin who invented fuse box
Keen insight into the pharmacological effects of all things through the innate foresightJust like all saints of earlier years, he was not only wise but also foresighted and amazed everyone around him. At the age of four, he was fluent in Hangul and discovered that Hangul was created in accordance with the principle of Yin-Yang and five elements. After learning Hangul, he moved onto studying a dictionary of Chinese characters and showed unbelievable wisdom by reading History of Three Kingdoms in Chinese, poems in Tang Dynasty, poems of Du Fu, KāngxīZìdiǎn (康熙字典) in order.
His extraordinary and excellent medical technique was given from the birth. It is known that he discerned the logic of all things in universe ever since he learned how to talk and write and have the foresighted ability of existence of diseases and therapeutic drugs.
The mysterious therapy myth that started from the earliest days
At the age of seven, Doctor began to search for the method of synthesizing medical molecules in the space pigment by looking at rainbows that are related to the secret of universe and pharmacological actions. Since then, he started to help patients in the locality who were dying without knowing the cause. By that time, his intuition that knows the principle of astronomical geography made it possible to save a person dying from snake bite by giving them boiled dried pollack from East Sea and save a patient with lung cancer by letting them be stung by hundreds of bees.
When he was nine years old, he supplemented the salt production method passed down in Korea and expressed his opinion to his grandfather to make properly processed salt by roasting it 9 times with strong thermal power using resinous knots of a pine tree or more, after mincing the salt into bamboo shoots. Until then, people did not know why the salt needs to be roasted or why bamboo shoots and resins are used, they just had been doing it habitually. The bamboo salt that is widely known and traded in the world today has thus emerged in the world.
In 1924, at the age of sixteen, he defeated Japanese men who tyrannized people in Uiju and crossed over to Manchuria for the independence movement. He joined Mohwasan unit led by Byeon Sang-ho who is a hero in the anti-Japanese movement, participated in anti-Japanese movement, and then helped the sick in Russia and Myohyangsan Mountain while escaping from Japanese tracking. When moving through the wild, he cured pneumoconiosis which was common among coal miners using medicinal herbs and moxa cautery and also successfully manufactured bamboo salt.
Withstood tough torture by the Japanese with moxa cautery, escaped and associated with monks – Song Man-gong, Kim Soo-wol, Ha Dong-san, Bang Han-am.
At the age of twenty-six, in 1934, on a spring day, he was arrested by a Japan police while going to Cheorwon to see Byeon Sang-ho who is a leader of Mohwasan troop that attacked Cheorwon police station. He was sentenced to 3 years in prison and served in Chuncheon prison.
After many months of torture, his whole body was covered in wounds. One day after serving a year and a half, he escaped from the prison and went to Myohyangsan Mountain where he treated himself with the Yeong-Gu method (靈灸法) which is also Insan moxa cautery method, which he created, and regained his health. However, most of his inmates who were not treated with moxa cautery eventually lost their lives due to aftereffects of torture. The Doctor went to Myohangsan and associated with monks – Song Man-gong, Kim Soo-wol, Ha Dong-san, Bang Han-am who were the intellects of the time.
He got married to Jung Yeong-ok in 1943, at the age of thirty five. After liberation on August 15, 1945, he moved to Seoul from Yongdeoksa Temple, Cheonmasan Mountain, Uiju, where he was hiding, and discussed about the future of the country with Yeo Un-hyeong, Park Ju-hyeok, Kim Gyu-sik, Baek Seong-uk, Lee Myeong-ryong, Choi Yeong-ho, Baek Eun-gye, Song Jin-woo, Kim Seong-su, Kim Beom-bu, Jeong In-bo, Jang Deok-su, Kim Jun-yeon, Jo Byeong-ok.
Attempt to establish a combined oriental and western medicine general hospital after the government formation
After the establishment of the government, he met with the President Rhee Syng-man to suggest the establishment of a combined oriental and western medicine general hospital and Dongseo Medical College, but it was achieved. In 1950, through Baek Seong-uk, who was then Minister of Home Affairs, he prophesied the President about the outbreak of war and suggested a countermeasure, but it was also rejected. As he saw how the country began to adopt toadyism and Rhee’s dictatorship began to dominate, he left the worldly place and went into a mountain after giving up his hopes of his opinions being accepted by the society.
Since 1950, Doctor stayed in the vicinity of Magoksa Temple which is in Gongju of Chungcheongnam-do, Gamnamugol in Gyeryongsan Mountain, in the vicinity of Yonghwasa Temple in Gyeryongsan Mountain, Namwon of Jeonbuk and Unbong Village, and finally moved to Hamyang in 1957.
After a short stay in Hamyang-eup, he built Insan thatched cottage in Salgujaengyi, Sambongsan Mountain and continued to make a living by making wooden bowls. His reputation was revealed even though he tried to hide, and many students from Seoul and various places came to see him and got lectured about his new drugs and reverse philosophies and more. Wherever he was, the myth of miraculous treatment continued. Until these days, he also used acupuncture as an important means of patient treatment.
Terminals for the patients with intractable disease, Insan Farm in Sambongsan and Sinyak center in Samnamdaek
After publishing his first book ‘The Universe and New Drugs’ in 1980, just before retiring in Hamyang, he continuously published ‘Gu Sae Sin Bang (救世神方)’, the Korean version of ‘The Universe and New Drugs’, in 1981 and published his medicine logic to the world.
In 1986, the Doctor, who had been living in Unlim thatched cottage after retiring in Hamyang-eup since December 31 of 1981, finally released the ‘Sinyak’ which is considered to be the immortal masterpiece of modern medicine in Korea. Then, with his aged body, he took public lectures around the country.
In 1986, he was the first president of the Sinyak Society, and in 1987, he launched the Folklore Sinyak Research Society. Later he published the first periodic publication of Insan medicine, ‘Minui Yak’. Due to publication of ‘Sinyak’, his original medical ideas became widely known to the world, and people from all over the country gathered to Sangdong Village in Hamyang-eup, where he stayed, Sinyak center in Samnamdaek and the whole area of Insan farm in Sambongsan Mountain.
At the age of 78, on June 20, 1986, he started his public lectures in the auditorium of the Korea Daily, and until the age of 83, in 1990, he did total 22 of public lectures and presented healthy way to live in the era of pollution.
Divine Doctor, made his way to the fairyland
At the age of 84, on March 3 in lunar calendar, the Imsin year in 1992, the family members were gathered and recorded ‘The last words to this world’. The essentials of his words, ‘The emphasis on forestry is a shortcut to rich country’, became a testament and the entire recorded statement was in Sisa Chunchu 4th Issue in 1992. Until his last breath, he only paid attention to the love for the poor and the sick, loyalty to the country, teaching of filial duty to the people in the world.
The Doctor, from 1989 to early 1992, stayed in Sinyak center of Samnamdaek, developed Sarijang for the last time, helped patients coming day and night, and finished his life with full of ups and downs and went to the fairyland at 11:25 pm on May 19, 1992 (April 17 in lunar calendar), at the age of 84, due to overwork. He was buried on the ridge of Sambongsan Insan Dongcheon where the patients were welcomed.
Since 1993, the publisher (currently Insan Publishing Company) established in Sinyak center, has summarized his quotations and manuscripts, and published united ‘Sin Ui Cancer Formulary’ (became the bible for folk remedy and alternative medicine), ‘Sin Ui Won Cho’, ‘Ui Sa Yeo Rae’, ‘Ui Yak Sin Seong’, ‘Hwal In Gu Se’ and ‘Sinyak Bon Cho 3’. In 1992, the second president of Sinyak Society, Kim Yun-su established Insan Research Institute in 2002, in order to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the death of the Doctor, and established Insan Oriental Medical Clinic and Insan Oriental Medicine Cancer Center to deliver Insan medicals and oriental medical cancer treatment.
